“Discipline your children, and they will give you peace…” – Proverbs 29:17 (NIV)
As humans, we live innately in a balance between a nature and nurture mindset. A mother nurtures a child, and a father nurtures a child to survive. We seek to survive spiritually, mentally, and physically. As a parent, you are responsible for ensuring the child/children can survive in whatever environment an adult has to maneuver in.
Like the good parents of the Bible, parents today are expected to provide a godly framework for their children. Parents are called to create a structured and loving environment where children can learn about right and wrong, experience healthy boundaries, and understand the importance of obedience and respect.
Proverbs 4:3 speaks of the son (King Solomon) who learnt from his father (King David), while being cherished by his mother. Verse 4 (NKJV) says, “He also taught me, and said to me: ‘Let your heart retain my words; keep my commands, and live.”
Three important principles are brought to our attention:
1. Solomon learned about God’s ways from his father.
2. There was a personal connection and a deep affection that motivated David to impart wisdom to his son Solomon.
3. David urges Solomon to internalise his words, to obey his commands, and to understand that doing so leads to life.
God wants true godliness and commitment to His way to be taught by parents primarily, and the example provided in the home rather than delegating that responsibility to others.
Parents, you have a God-given role in shaping the lives of your children, recognising that this is not only a privilege but a sacred duty with far-reaching consequences. Honour that responsibility!
