1 John 4:17 (NIV)
“This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.” – 1 John 4:17 (NIV)
As children, we often dream about that ‘happily ever after’, especially girls. We daydream about love and all the frilly things that go along with it. It is never anything less than perfect. Perfect love and perfect life. But the reality is when we think of that perfect love, our thoughts should be focused on Adam and Eve.
Some may say it is not a good example of perfect love. But even though they are known for the single worst mistake in history, Adam and Eve are still the first couple ever made for each other in the spiritual and physical sense. God made Eve, especially for Adam. She was not only made for him but from him. This was God’s own handiwork at creating a relationship.
Just like many love stories today, it doesn’t involve turning rags into a fancy dress and the prince trotting in on a white horse to save the princess. However, many will attest to making ‘lemonades’ from the many lemons along the way; staying awake all night to attend to a sick child, never waking to breakfast in bed, snoring, complaining, fights about the television remote, washroom etiquette, and so many more bickering. But while the two partners are far from perfect, they love each other perfectly. Especially when it is a marriage created by God’s design, as only He can do.
The Word of God in 1 John 4:12 (NIV), tells us, “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.” So, even though Adam and Eve were imperfect, that imperfection was made perfect in their love for one another. No matter how flawed they were, their marriage was created in perfect love because God himself created it and He dwelt within the midst.
What should we learn about the relationship Adam and Eve had with God? We should not worry unnecessarily over a fairytale life. Your love story, yes yours, no matter how plain or how extravagant it is, was designed by God. He perfected it. He’s the author and the finisher (Hebrews 12:2).
Happily, ever after doesn’t always come with ballrooms, elegant gowns, and white shiny horses. Most of the time, it comes with tiredness but it is well since if it comes from God; it’s perfect!
Pray
Heavenly Father, forgive us of our sins. We love You. We pray that You refine us by the power of Your Holy Spirit so that there will be more of You in our lives. We know we are made in Your image and desire to reflect who You say we are. Thank You, Father, for Your interest in our lives. We look forward to all You still have in store for us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
