Persevere in the Presence of God – Part 1

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life…” – James 1:12 (NIV)

The above Scripture reminds us that all who endure trials and remain faithful to God will be rewarded with eternal life. It suggests that trials are a way to test us and to strengthen our faith in God.

Hannah, a significant character in the Bible, whose name means “favour” or “grace”, in spite of her deep sorrow, remained faithful in her belief. God turned her faith into overflowing joy. Importantly, she was the first woman the Bible recorded who prayed.

Hanna was Elkanna’s first wife, with Peninnah being the second (1st Samuel 1:2). Elkanna wanted children, but Hannah was unable to bear them. God had closed up her womb; it was His divine intervention (1st Samuel 1:5). In this way, her faith was tested as she struggled in her daily condition of barrenness. Thus, Hannah’s barrenness is ascribed directly to the activity of God.

Friends, we will always face disappointment, struggles, or even trials. We may even feel inadequate or inferior about life, but remember, the divine God can always intervene. He intervened for Hannah, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Samson’s mother, and the Shunammite woman, all initially barren women, even identifying some of the children as special who went on to do mighty works in God’s name. What an awesome God we serve!

Hannah’s account is powerful, full of strength, courage, persistent prayers, and an unwavering commitment to seeking God’s face. What a role model for parents!
