“The reward for humility…is riches and honour and life.” – Proverbs 22:4 (ESV)
Humility means not thinking too highly of ourselves or filling our minds and hearts with pride. It allows us to consider others first. This does not mean we are weak, as some would like us to believe. In fact, God honours the humble with riches and life (as our main Scripture clearly states).
Jesus has shown us how to live humbly while we serve others. All His life while on earth was devoted to serving others. He healed the sick, caused the blind to see, and performed many miracles. His biggest act of service and humility was recorded in John 13:1-5 when he washed His disciples’ feet, leaving the example for us to emulate.
In Matthew 23:1-12 Jesus spoke about the Scribes and Pharisees and described how they acted. Their behaviour was the opposite of humility – they did everything for selfish gain, taking the seats of honour, demanding respect when they walked around, etc.
Jesus lived the opposite way! He was born in a stable, placed others before Himself, and never bragged. He taught His followers that “…whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant – (Matthew 20:27 – NKJV). When we humble ourselves, then we will be exalted (James 4:10).
As Christians, we are encouraged to live by looking out for each other and always trying to lend a helping hand to the poor and needy among us. There are so many who need help, but we turn a blind eye. Then, there are those who are quick to ridicule others instead of showing grace while helping them overcome whatever difficulties they might be experiencing.
What about you? Are you operating as a servant while you live? How do you treat others? Do you see yourself as better? I pray we all understand that as we live this life, and moreover, as Christians(Christ-like), we seek to serve each other at every given opportunity.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NKJV) says, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Amen!
