Relationships within the Family

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” – Matthew 6:12 (NKJV)

Jesus’ words are deep and powerful! A debt is something that is owed. It therefore means that one cannot be free unless the payment is made. Romans 13:8 says, ”Owe no one anything except to love one another…” It is therefore clear that payments of debts are imperative. The verse in Matthew clearly shows us that we must make the first move if we are to enjoy the benefits of God’s forgiveness.

Unforgiveness within the family is causing deep pain between husbands and wives, children and parents, and siblings. We have learnt that there is personal gain when one forgives. The damage caused could extend and create a generational curse because of reactions to the effects of evil acts within the family. The acts of being hated, betrayed, rejected, envied, abandoned, and molested are real and prevalent in families throughout history.

In the account of Genesis 45, we encounter a moving scene that paints a picture of what should happen within families. The account speaks of the meeting between Joseph and his brothers in Egypt. Joseph’s words speak volumes. He says in verse 5, “But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.” Verse 7 says, “And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.” What a heart! After years of pain. We should always look for the positives in every situation that confronts us. It may take one week or years to recognise the positives, but they will surface in God’s time.

On the other hand, in Genesis 42:21-22, we discover that the brothers did not forget the evil that they had done and had borne this guilt for all those years. So what can we conclude? Free yourself from debt. God does not intend for all parties involved to suffer. God is willing to forgive. Free yourself to love again, laugh again, and live again.

Prayer

Lord, Jesus, thank You for Your forgiveness. Help me to forgive everyone who may have caused me pain. Help me to realise that I need to free my mind and allow You to work in me and through me by Your Holy Spirit. Give me the strength that I need to display unconditional love. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
