“Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus says The Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.”
Joshua 7:13 (KJV)
Some say God cursed the first man and woman after they sinned (Genesis 3: 16-19).
There are a number of curses contained in Deuteronomy chapters 27 and 28 for those who are disobedient to God. But if a person who has been living under a curse repents, turns to God, and is obedient to Him, all evidence or remnants of that curse can be wiped away because of the redeeming work of Jesus Christ on Calvary’s Cross.
1 Chronicles 4: 9-10 (KJV) tells us of an honourable man called Jabez. His mother gave him that name because she bore him in sorrow. That name was a curse to Jabez. If Jabez was not aware of that, he would not have cried out to the Lord. But he was aware. Clearly, the curse of sorrow must have been following him. He didn’t feel sorry for himself. He didn’t complain to others. He didn’t say, “Nothing or no one can help me!” He knew who his Redeemer was! Jabez called upon God, and God answered him.
After years of living as a born-again kingdom citizen, I became aware of a generational curse following my family. I discovered that every single female in my maternal family had two sets of children from second marriages! As my own marriage struggled to survive, I, like Jabez, cried out to God and His Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth, revealed to me, the cause of my pain.
After a period of fasting and praying, I began to see a change in the situation, but it was far from being fixed. I had to face the fact that I had contributed to the generational curse being kept alive by the things I said and did. I had to repent of my foolish behaviour, and make a conscious effort to live right on a daily basis as Ephesians 4: 22-24 admonishes us. It states, “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
June 27th, 2022 marked thirty-five (35) years of marriage for my husband and I. Yes, we are still living together, by God’s Grace, and there is no desire in either of us to break our vows. Beloved, the generational curse in my family has been broken. The one in yours can be broken too! Only believe and pray.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, Your Word declares that if the Son therefore makes us free, we shall be free indeed. Today, I repent and accept the fact that I am free, my family is free from all written and spoken curses, especially those we have placed on ourselves. I thank You, I rejoice, and stand fast in that liberty, and declare that I will no longer be entangled with any yoke of bondage. This I pray in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, Amen.
