Seeking God’s Guidance

“Guide me in your truth and teach me…my hope is in you all day long.” – Psalm 25:5 (NIV)

In today’s world, many people attribute their success and wealth to their own efforts. When asked how they accomplished so much, some will say, “I worked hard for what I have,” or proudly declare, “I am a self-made man.” Yet as George Matthew Adams wisely stated, “There is no such thing as a self-made man. We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success.”

I can certainly agree with Adams. As Christians, we understand that beyond the support of others, our ultimate source of success, guidance, and strength is God. The Bible is filled with examples of prayers that worked in the past and are still powerful today. Psalm 25:4-5 reminds us to seek God’s direction. This prayer highlights that our accomplishments flow from God’s wisdom, not our effort.

Additionally, Matthew 6:33 teaches us to set our priorities straight: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (NIV). When we seek God’s will above all else, He promises to supply our needs. The life of David, described as a man after God’s own heart, illustrates this truth. His prayerful dependence on the Lord is beautifully expressed in Psalm 23, which continues to encourage God’s people today. It reassures us that when we seek His guidance, we are never left alone – He leads us in paths of righteousness and provides protection and peace.

Trusting in God and asking for His guidance does not make us weak. On the contrary, it shows that we recognise the greatness of the all-knowing God who is fully able to deliver us from evil. True strength is not found in self-reliance but in surrendering to His wisdom.

As we reflect on seeking God’s guidance, let us remember that prayer is our lifeline to His direction. We may make plans, but only when we yield them to God do they truly prosper. In every decision, whether small or great, He invites us to seek His face and trust His leading.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I ask in the precious name of Jesus that You give me the desire to trust fully in Your guidance. Help me to rely on Your wisdom in every area of my life and to believe that Your plans are always best. Amen.
