Serving Others

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13 (ESV)

“Humility, however deep it be, neither disquiet, nor troubles, nor disturbs the soul; it is accompanied by peace, joy and tranquility.”  St. Teresa of Avila

Serving in humility means recognising that our strength comes from the Lord. When we are doing God’s will, when we are doing God’s work, there is no place for self-recognition, no place for pride, for His will and His work can only be manifested by His Spirit, Who connects us to Him.

Matthew 28:19-20 informs us to ‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising people in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and significantly, teaching them to observe all that God has commanded.

St. Teresa of Avila’s poem also states that “Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which He looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good, Yours are the hands with which He blesses all the world.”

The hands of Jesus are no longer on earth to bless and heal. In our service, we need to make the time to go and reach others so that we can use our hands to touch, comfort, and bring healing as Christ did when He walked the earth.

Our life-long project is to heal the world and make it a better place. How? There are many needs: the need for peace, the need for harmony, etc. How are we to respond? The project you set up doesn’t have to be extensive. Little by little, each one can reach one in service to Christ Jesus once we open our hearts and minds to come up with solutions to serve our brothers and sisters in making the world a better place.

Prayer

Father God, we come before Your throne of grace, asking that You minister to each and every one of us. Help us to recognise that it is only by Your might and power that we can do all things. Remind us, Father, that it is only us, physically on earth, who can reach out to each other in our quest to make the world a better place.

Rid us of pride and haughtiness. Help us to humbly serve You, recognising that our gifts are from You, Lord, and help us to use them only for Your honour and glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
