“Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.” – Genesis 45:5 (KJV)
Joseph had never stopped loving his brothers for what they had done, even though he endured slavery, suffering, imprisonment, and the loss of a loving father through no fault of his own.
As he looked at them, waiting to be sold precious corn to take back home, he fought the urge to embrace them and reveal his identity. He pretended to be rough and even accused them of stealing, but his love for them caused him to break down. He ordered food to be prepared for them and planned to dine with them privately. He could not be bitter. He secluded himself and cried with longing, but later overcame his sorrow and revealed himself to them (Genesis 43-44). He was overjoyed to see his own flesh and blood after so many years.
This is what love does. It conquers all hatred and bitterness, even when it may seem justified. The brothers were afraid after they discovered who he was. They believed he would exact punishment for the way they treated him, but love bears no record of wrongs (Genesis 50:15-21). Love endures. It gives without counting the cost and stays when walking away is easier. Love outlasts everything!
Can we develop such love in our hearts towards others?
Prayer
Lord, Your Word in Romans 8:38-39 says, nothing shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Thank You, Jesus, for loving us above and beyond our selfishness and greed. Thank You for laying Your sinless life down for us and demonstrating true love for us. Help us now to love one another as You love us, in Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.
