The Believer’s Faith

“…Abraham Believed God …”- Galatians 3:6 (NIV)

The book of Hebrews chapter 11 begins, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 1:1 – NKJV). You might ask, how can things hoped for have substance, or evidence be not seen?

When we stand in a courtroom, evidence must be provided to the judge, and in spite of the form it takes, that evidence must be seen, or it cannot be considered for the case to be tried.

Thus, Faith means belief or confidence in the absence of tangible proof. It requires us to believe and act on that belief first, then see the proof later. It requires us to step out into the unknown like Abraham, who, being obedient and not knowing the end,  went and received the blessing. God’s Word, His promise, is what we must believe to see the impossible happen.

One Christian lady shared with me her own experiences of struggling as a single parent of three children. She understood the value of education and wanted her children to attend high school. There were no high schools in the remote area where she lived and worked, and she could not afford the cost of sending them to the city. So, she made it a matter of prayer and felt assured that God heard her and would provide a way. Within a two-year period, a high school was erected in that remote area, and children from several surrounding districts were able to attend, including her own.

King Jehoshaphat was confronted with the threat of being wiped out by a great army of Moabites and Ammonites who came to make war against him. He knew it was impossible to defeat them, so he went before the Lord and was saved by a mighty deliverance at the hand of God (2 Chronicles 20:20). The Psalmist David wrote, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me?” Even David had moments of discouragement but encouraged himself, saying, “Hope thou in God…” (Psalm 42).

Faith in God makes a way, and when others see how God delivers, they, too, will be encouraged to trust Him.

Prayer

Lord, Faith in You will move mountains and calm troubled seas. Help us to trust You to bring us through those tough times and, in the process, build our faith and the faith of those around us; in Jesus’ name, Amen.
