The Blessing in Obedience and Waiting

“…so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart.” – Psalm 119:34 (NIV)

The God we serve is all-powerful and almighty. He is well and able to fulfill all of His promises. The importance of obeying God and waiting is highlighted in the account of Abraham and Sarah. The Lord promised Abraham and Sarah a son, and after twenty-five years, the promise was fulfilled (Genesis 21:1-7). Waiting on God brings the blessing and purpose of His will in our lives, while disobedience delays it. As humans, we tend to become a little impatient with God during our waiting season, but we must remember the promise.

During his waiting season, Abraham laid with his servant Hagar, and she bore a son for him, but he was not the promised son. God promised Sarah and Abraham a son, meaning that a son had to come from her womb. More than two decades later, Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Abraham in their “old age.” They named him Isaac. Sarah and Abraham obeyed all the commands of God concerning their son.

Psalm 27:14 (KJV) says, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” Waiting tests our faith and patience in the Lord, and this is where we, as believers, attract blessings from God. Abraham’s family waited and eventually received the blessing of the Lord.

After these events, in Genesis 22:1-5, God called Abraham and gave him instructions. God said, “Take your son, your only son whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” (Verse 2 – ESV). Abraham loved Isaac, but he obeyed God and set out to offer up his son. Sometimes in our lives, God will test our faith in Him, and we must obey in order to receive our blessings. Abraham’s obedience made way for him to receive his blessings; he became the father of multitudes. Remember, the blessing is in obedience and waiting.
