“For it is God Who works in you to will and to do for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13 (NIV)
The account of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) beautifully illustrates the power of self-examination and God’s unrelenting love. When the younger son demanded his inheritance and squandered it in reckless living, he eventually reached a place of despair. Yet, it was in this moment of self-reflection that his journey back to his father began:
“But when he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!” – Luke 15:17 (NIV)
This pivotal moment of self-examination was not merely about recognising his mistakes but about realising his father’s goodness and generosity. This understanding led him to repentance and the decision to return home.
Self-examination is a powerful tool for spiritual growth. It allows us to assess our actions, intentions, and the condition of our hearts. As Philippians 2:13 reminds us, this is not merely an act of human willpower; it is God working within us, guiding our thoughts and actions to align with His good purpose.
When the prodigal son chose to return, he found his father waiting with open arms, ready to forgive and restore him. This mirrors the boundless love and grace God extends to us. No matter how far we wander, God’s love remains constant. He eagerly waits for our return, ready to celebrate our repentance and restoration as His children.
Today:
1. Reflect on your journey. Spend some quiet time reflecting on your life. Are there areas where you’ve strayed from God’s will? Acknowledge them honestly before Him.
2. Recognise God’s work. Remember that even in your moments of self-examination, it is God working within you, prompting you to draw closer to Him.
3. Embrace God’s love. Just as the father embraced the prodigal son, God’s love is always available. Accept His grace, knowing that His forgiveness is complete and His love is endless.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unchanging, everlasting love and mercy. Help me to honestly examine my heart and actions. I invite You to work within me, aligning my will with Yours. Just as the prodigal son returned to his father, I return to You, trusting in Your everlasting love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
