“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” – John 10:27 (KJV)
Every believer embarks on their spiritual journey with a personal call from God to get to know Him more. This call is not based on our goodness or position, but it is a result of God’s gracious love.
God’s call has always been personal, relational, and purposeful, as He calls His people into relationship before responsibility. God called Adam and Eve to walk with Him in the garden (Genesis 3:8-9); He called Abraham to trust Him (Genesis 12:1-3); and He called the disciples from their fishing boats to follow Him (Matthew 4:19).
This call happens before we are even called to serve, as God desires first to have a relationship with us (Jeremiah 31:3). Normally, we can get very busy doing ‘things’ for God, but forget the importance of spending time with Him. Our hearts’ posture should always be one of readiness, quietness, and humility, ready to hear God’s voice; otherwise, we may miss hearing the call to a relationship with Him. Samuel was obedient; he took the time to listen and respond to God’s call in 1st Samuel 3:10.
The God Call begins with love. His voice draws us into fellowship, forgiveness and friendship, and is a divine invitation for us to walk closely with Him. He speaks to us through His Word, His Spirit, and the peace He places in our hearts. John 16:13 (KJV) states, “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth …”. My own call from God comes to mind here. A friend invited me to church, and after attending various services for a while, the Spirit of God ministered to me, and I answered the call to step into a relationship with Him. Responding to the God Call requires faith, even before all the details are apparent; it is more about our availability, rather than our ability.
Disobedience, worrying, pride, and busyness block our spiritual hearing and prevent us from hearing God’s call. On the other hand, prayer, worship and obedience increase our sensitivity to God’s voice. Has God been speaking to you through His Word, people or circumstances lately? Today, make space in your lives to listen for God’s Call purposefully. When we answer this call, we experience peace, direction and deep fulfilment that cannot be found anywhere else. Be blessed.
