The Cost of Discipleship

‘…“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me…whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” – Luke 9:23-24 (NIV)

When we hear the word disciple, we think of the word follower, but have you ever thought of words such as steward, leader, or vessel?

If you visit the doctor’s office, you may be warned to change your diet and avoid foods that are unhealthy for the body. Without hesitation, we obey the instructions of the physician; this way, we ensure our body functions at its optimum. But what about our spiritual well-being? In God’s  Word, the greatest physician of all time, Jesus Christ, left a few instructions in Luke 9:23-24:

  • He said, ‘Deny Self.’ This isn’t about self-hatred but about placing God’s will above our own desires. It’s about surrendering our ego and seeking God’s kingdom first.
  • Take Up the Cross: The cross symbolises suffering, sacrifice, and obedience. It’s a daily commitment, not a one-time event. What are the daily challenges that require you to “take up your cross”? This could be resisting temptation, forgiving others, or serving those in need.
  • Lose to Gain: This is the paradox of the Gospel. By surrendering our lives to Christ, we find true life abundant and eternal. What areas of your life are you holding on to too tightly?

We also have the World’s View versus God’s View: The world tells us to pursue self-fulfillment and comfort. Jesus tells us to pursue self-sacrifice and service. How can you align your values with God’s instead of the world’s?

  1. Instead of seeking recognition, choose to serve anonymously.
  2. Instead of indulging in comfort, choose to spend time in prayer or Bible study.
  3. Instead of holding onto resentment, choose to forgive.

Friends, create a list of areas where you need to surrender to God, identify one specific “cross” you will carry today, pray for a heart of humility and obedience, and pray for the ability to love others sacrificially. See yourself through God’s eyes. That way, you will aspire to love abundantly, walk in your divine purpose, and love others unconditionally. You will be a true disciple of Jesus.
