The Light of the World

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” – John 9:5 (NKJV)

Today, believers, and even those who are contemplating becoming believers, God is saying that He sent His Son Jesus to be the Light of this world.

In ancient Hebrew philosophy, “light” represented knowledge and morality. There are Scriptures in the Bible that use blindness as a spiritual metaphor. Those who are blind are incapable of seeing light, even when it’s presented to them. Those who are “spiritually blind” reject God, making it literally impossible for them to perceive His truth (Ephesians 4:17-19).

But let us first look at knowledge: Knowledge shapes our understanding of the world and influences our actions and decisions. It encompasses the information, facts, skills, and insight individuals acquire through learning, experience, and observation. Knowledge is dynamic and evolving, and as we learn, we continually share to positively transform lives.

In John 8:12, Jesus referred to Himself as the light of the world while He was in the world, implying His role in salvation. “As long as I am in the world…,” meant that His time in the flesh would come to an end, and He was looking for disciples to continue His work even after He had left this world. So, you and I, who have read the Word, must now become the light of the world. We are to continue the Great Commission while there is breath in us.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us that there is a time for everything. Jesus had a time span; likewise, you and I also have a time span in which to work. As we discover who Jesus is, He will tell us who we are and what our purpose is when we connect with Him. You don’t have to remain limited by who you once were and who you are not. Find out who Jesus says you are and undertake the path to become who He has already made you: a LIGHT in your home, your workplace, your school space, and your community. Remember, wherever you go, shine bright for our Lord Jesus Christ.
