“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassion never fail.” Lamentations 3:22 (NIV)
The book of Lamentations deals with suffering, the suffering of God’s people. Amidst unbelievable tragedy, Jeremiah describes his anguish in the face of this suffering. Despite the suffering and agony, however, there was still an incredible message of hope. That’s where the meaning of Lamentations 3:22-23 stands out.
In our ever-changing world, there will be moments where it is easy to lose hope when life feels overwhelming, but it’s comforting to know that God’s love remains constant and unchanging. It is a reminder that hope is still alive. It doesn’t matter how dire our circumstances may seem; God’s compassion and faithfulness are never depleted. They are new every morning (Verse 23).
When we are in the middle of tragedy and suffering, there is the temptation to think God doesn’t love us, but we are reminded that “because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed…”. Find peace in knowing that God’s love will never fail us. His love is not based on what we do or don’t do and what our circumstances are but on His unchangeable character. Be assured that each day is a new opportunity to experience His mercy and grace.
As a result of God’s love for us, “His compassions never fail…”. God’s compassion and mercy is as a result of His love. His love is loyal and has no end, and neither will His compassion. There is an overwhelming joy in knowing this fact. Each day we wake up, we are assured that His mercies are new. It doesn’t matter how much or how often we depend on God’s compassion; we know there will be more for us tomorrow. Be careful, however, about abusing His compassion. It is not permission to sin as we want willfully. It is an opportunity to go to God and request grace.
“…great is your faithfulness…” says Verse 23, confirming Who God is. We receive mercy and compassion based on God’s love and faithfulness, not because we are faithful. And it is His faithfulness to His promises that allows us to receive His mercies.
Let’s receive God’s mercies every day by embracing His faithfulness and great love. Irrespective of what you’ve done or wherever you’ve been, God’s mercies are new for us every morning.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we give You thanks for every day, knowing that You will see us through. Thank You for Your mercies, which are renewed every morning. Thank You for Your steadfast love that will never fail us. You have made a way for us to come back to You and live in love, peace, and joy. Blessed be Your name, Amen.
