The New Covenant

“This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” – Hebrews 8:10 (NIV)

The children of Israel were ecstatic after they crossed the Red Sea safely. They had witnessed the amazing deliverance of every Israelite from Pharaoh’s clutches and the destruction of the Egyptian army who had been pursuing them. They sang songs of deliverance and danced on the shores of the sea. But soon after, as they journeyed into the wilderness, they encountered difficulty and began complaining. There was no water, and who could live without water? They had forgotten the miracles they had witnessed when God sent plagues into Egypt. They expressed a desire to return to bondage in Egypt because of some discomfort.

But God reminded them by saying to Moses, “tell the children of Israel: ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people…” – Exodus 19:3-5 (NKJV).

It is no different today. We often experience God’s goodness and see His hand of deliverance, but we quickly forget when faced with new challenges. But our ever-faithful God says, “I will make a new covenant with them (you), I will put My laws in their (your) mind and write them in their (your) hearts.” – Hebrews 8:10. God promises to be a God to us if we will be a people who trust Him, who know Him and serve Him from a pure heart.

Let us, therefore, draw near to Him with a true heart in full assurance of faith. Let us hold fast to the profession of our faith without wavering (Hebrews 10:22); we’re in the new covenant with Christ.

Prayer

Lord, Help us to lay aside murmuring and complaining and exercise our faith even when situations appear impossible to resolve. You are God, faithful and true, and You keep covenant and mercy to a thousand generations. We praise and thank You for the forgiveness we so readily receive from You. Amen.
