“Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost….likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” – Luke 15:6-7 (KJV)
The passage of Scripture in Luke 15:1-7 serves as a powerful encouragement, reminding us of God’s unwavering love for humanity and, on a personal level, His love for each one of us. Jesus addressed the religious leaders who criticised Him for associating with sinners. Through the parable of the lost sheep, He beautifully illustrated His love for every individual, regardless of their past or future.
Sheep have a tendency to wander, as I vividly recall from my childhood days spent on the Essequibo Coast of Guyana during August vacations. One of our chores as children was to take the sheep out to the ‘backdam,’ an area where rice fields were located. While my older cousins ensured most of the sheep stayed put, there was always one that managed to stray. We would diligently search for this lost sheep, understanding the importance of not leaving any behind.
It may seem peculiar that a shepherd would risk the safety of 99% of the flock for just 1%. However, the essence of this parable lies not in neglecting the majority but in rejoicing over finding the lost. The lost sheep couldn’t save itself or find the shepherd; it relied entirely on the shepherd’s intervention. Similarly, Jesus taught that God actively seeks out the lost, rejoicing when they are found.
When Jesus finds His people, He carries them, as Romans 5:6 emphasises: “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly” (NIV). The religious leaders, however, failed to grasp the joy of finding the lost, as they grumbled when sinners drew near to Jesus. Though the sheep is not drawn on its own, Jesus stressed the importance of rejoicing when it comes, i.e. when we repent. Allow God to find you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I thank You for seeking me out and rejoicing when I turn to You in repentance. Today, I dedicate my life to You. Thank You for Your boundless love and relentless pursuit of me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
