The Holy Spirit is the primary agent of spiritual transformation. He convicts believers of sin, righteousness, and judgement, drawing them closer to Christ and helping them grow in their faith. He works within each believer, renewing their minds and hearts, and producing the fruit of the Spirit, such as love, joy, peace, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). This transformation is essential for becoming more like Jesus and fulfilling the call to discipleship.
According to the Cambridge dictionary, transformation is defined as a complete change in the appearance or character of something or someone, especially so that that thing or person is improved. At the heart of discipleship is transformation. A believer who is transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit is well-positioned to be an effective disciple. Galatians 2:20 urges us to be crucified with Christ and to live by faith in Christ Jesus. When the world looks at us, they must see Jesus in us. Like Jesus, we too must disciple others.
One example of transformation in nature is caterpillars becoming butterflies; this is a metamorphosis in the insect’s life cycle. It takes time for the process to be completed; it does not happen overnight. Thus, as followers of Jesus engaged in discipleship, let us be patient with those whom we teach if we desire to see results (Galatians 6:9). Give them time to learn and grow while the Holy Spirit is working in their lives. Remember, sanctification is both instantaneous and progressive; let us be determined to stay with the process and see Jesus transform their lives.
Today, I encourage all believers to invite the Holy Spirit to transform your lives, renew your hearts and minds, and help you to grow in your faith (Romans 12:1-2). Changed lives are conduits of love and unity with a yearning to see others live for Jesus, thus allowing the community of believers to expand and influence the world through the process of discipleship. Changed minds lead to a better world!
