‘Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” – Luke 7:48 (NLT)
She was commended for her great faith and love by the Master.
This woman felt as though her world had unravelled in a moment’s time. Doors had opened, and walls had crumbled. Thoughts of the future no longer frightened her but thrilled her. Her heart was wild with joy as she followed the Rabbi through the doorway uninvited (Luke 7:37).
Ignoring the men’s stares, she walked straight to Jesus, reclining at a table. In her hand was an alabaster jar of perfume. Her body was trembling as she approached Jesus. She covered His feet with her kisses and then anointed them with the precious perfume. She wiped His feet with her hair (Luke 7:38). How else could she express her heartfelt gratitude to the Man Who had loved her so well?
How would you respond if a prostitute entered your home uninvited? Do you display understanding and love toward those whose lives have been shattered by sin?
Think about the debt Jesus cancelled for you. Think about the specific sins for which He has forgiven you. How can you express your gratitude?
Only those who realise the depth of their sin can appreciate the complete forgiveness God offers them. Do you appreciate the wideness of God’s mercy? Are you grateful for His forgiveness?
Many would respond to this sinful woman just as the Pharisee did, with disdain (Luke 7:39). It’s so easy to look with judgement rather than love at people whose lives have been devastated by sin. But Jesus looked at her and saw her need for forgiveness.
Let us be reminded that no matter how sinful, how broken, how entrenched in error we might be, forgiveness is available if only we seek it in faith. Jesus promised it (Acts 10:43).
Prayer
Lord, when others rejected me, You embraced me. You touched what was untouchable in me. Make me a woman who loves much, a woman who is not afraid to fall at Your feet, bathing them with tears, in the name of Jesus, Amen.
