“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow — not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” – Romans 8:38 (NIV)
As believers, our relationship with God has its high moments and its low moments. None of us are perfect, so there are times when we are faithful and doing what’s right in God’s eyes, while there are times when we give in to our fleshly nature and do what pleases us. In those latter seasons, our connection to God becomes weak because we pull away from Him due to the guilt and shame that we feel in ourselves.
This is because, as humans, our attitude where love is concerned tends to come with conditions. We often demonstrate love to those who do the same for us. It’s easy for us to reciprocate the love that others show to us but difficult for us to show love to those who don’t love us. Due to this type of socialisation where love is concerned, many of us approach our relationship with God in the same manner. We think that He couldn’t possibly still love us after all we’ve done.
However, though God can be disappointed in us when we choose to follow our own way, His Word says in Romans 8:38- 39 that nothing can ever separate us from His love. It is His love for us that caused Jesus to make the ultimate sacrifice for us on the cross while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8). Therefore, in those low seasons when we drift, the onus is on us to pull ourselves together and take advantage of the sacrifice that Jesus made.
Jesus gave us the free gift of forgiveness. We should take it upon ourselves not to dwell on the guilt and shame we feel but seek His forgiving grace. His blood covers all of our sins; therefore, we don’t have to be ashamed. He loves us, and it’s always His desire for us to come back to Him, so take that step today.
Prayer
Father, we thank You for Your unconditional love and grace, which You freely give to us. Even now, we repent of every sin and return our hearts to You fully. Purify us again by Your Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
