Waves of Forgiveness
Matthew 18:26-27 (NKJV)
“…Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all…the master…was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.” – Matthew 18:26-27 (NKJV)
I must admit every time I read Jesus’s parable of the unforgiving servant, I become so enraged. I can’t help but think how much more ungrateful and selfish this man can be. For sure, he lacked empathy and compassion. He owed so much money that he could not ever repay, yet after he was forgiven of such a huge debt, he heartlessly punished another for owing him a significantly smaller amount. The forgiven man had received mercy but did not extend the same. How many times have we seen this scenario in today’s society? How many times have we exercised this type of ingratitude ourselves?
Getting angry or upset over such a situation is all right and okay, but what happens next? Must we stop there? I believe it is this expected response that Jesus is looking for, and thus, this account helps us to deliberately think and act faithfully as believers and children of God when presented with an opportunity to forgive. What would be your response to the kindness and mercies God has shown us repeatedly? He has forgiven our colossal debt of sins; will you do the same for others who are indebted to you?
Isn’t it hypocritical of us to ask for God’s forgiveness and still carry feelings of resentment and bitterness toward others? We find it effortless to remember, hold on to, and resent what others have said and done against us but then seek God’s forgiveness so earnestly. If this behaviour seems familiar to you, failing to forgive others, then you’re not different from that ungrateful servant Jesus spoke about in the parable. It is to for a change.
Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, teaches us to forgive and to keep forgiving over and over. We must remember that when we walk with the Spirit, we are changed individuals. Therefore, allow God’s kindness, grace, and mercies to flow from you to others. Be waves of forgiveness!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for forgiving our sins. Move us to forgive others, showing them the same kindness, grace, and mercies You have shown to us. This I pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
