If Peter had owned AirPods, he probably would have lost one in the Sea of Galilee. Imagine the scene:
Jesus says, “Come.”
Peter hears one word and steps out of a perfectly good boat. That’s not common sense. That’s faith! For a few glorious moments, Peter is doing something that should be impossible. He is walking on water. No flotation device, life jacket, or online tutorial. Then something changes. The wind starts speaking. The waves start preaching. Logic grabs a microphone. Fear launches a podcast. And Peter starts listening. (Matthew 14:22-33).
Two Broadcasts, One Listener
At first, Peter was tuned in to: “Come.” Then he switched channels. Now he’s listening to:
“People don’t walk on water.” “You’re going to drown.” “This was a terrible idea.” “What were you thinking?”
The same ears that had received faith began to receive doubt. The same hearing that got him out of the boat almost sank him.
Isn’t that often our story?
On Sunday, we hear: “God will provide.” By Tuesday, we’ve heard: “The economy is unstable.”
We hear: “You are called.” Then we hear: “Who do you think you are?”
We hear: “Nothing is impossible with God.” Then we hear: “Be realistic.”
Brethren, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). But doubt often sneaks in through the very same doorway.
The Problem Isn’t Your Ears
Peter’s problem wasn’t that he stopped hearing. It’s that he started hearing the wrong thing louder than the right thing. The storm had been there all along. The waves and wind didn’t change. The voice he prioritised changed.
Many believers spend their lives trying to silence every storm. But Jesus often teaches us something deeper – you don’t need a quieter storm. You need a louder Saviour, Jesus.
As you go about today, ask the question: Which voice are you allowing to become the loudest in your heart today – the voice of Jesus calling you to trust Him, or the voice of fear telling you to doubt Him?
