Who is the Holy Spirit?

I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!”

Psalm 139:7 (NLT)

The Holy Spirit is God because He possesses the characteristics of God. His Omnipresence is seen in Psalm 139:7-8

Again, God is Omnipresent – He is everywhere. Because this is so, we can never escape from His Spirit. This is good news to those who know and love God since no matter what we do or where we go; we can never be far from God’s comforting presence.

The Greek word in reference to the Holy Spirit is Parakletos, which means one who is called to one’s side, especially to help, assist, guide, and direct. Many times we look for help in the wrong places. It’s like using a GPS for directions; it doesn’t always take us to the right location. In order to get to the right location, it has to detour. When we invite the Holy Spirit into our lives, there will be no detour because He’s our Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, and Standby. What a joy and relief to know that we do not have to labour through life because God is always with us, and our victory is secure in Him.

The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and helps us to grow spiritually (John 16:8). He is actively engaged in our lives and in our world in every way, stirring our hearts, joining us together in fellowship, encouraging and helping us in our prayers. Jesus said, ‘It is to your advantage that I leave and send the Holy Spirit (John 16:7-11).

We know that the Holy Spirit is indeed a divine person because He possesses a mind, emotions, and a will. Through prayer to the Holy Spirit, we can tap into His divine power and wisdom and allow Him to work in and through us to accomplish God’s purposes in the world. He is real!

Prayer

Holy Spirit, grant us wisdom to make good choices and courage to face the challenges of life as we work to accomplish our goals in You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
