“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”
Galatians 5:22 -23 (NKJV)
An incident occurred about three weeks ago and I became upset and wanted to respond by lashing out. I had thoughts of inferiority and my insecurities came to the forefront. But then I paused, after pondering about all I’ll do. The Holy Spirit spoke and I told the Lord I’ll trust Him in the process.
Subsequently, another incident occurred. I had already been biting my lips from speaking, trying to prevent an argument with my spouse. When this occurred I paused again. I ran to the Word and began to read, looking for strength. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (AMP) speaks to us about overcoming temptation. Choosing to seek God, in times of temptation, can really help us to grow in Christ. I have first-hand experience.
So many times we speak about self-control and claim it. But claiming and practising self-control are two different things. It’s a process I’m learning daily. Having to deal with family members and exercising self-control require full submission to the Holy Spirit. It is easier to say, “Holy Spirit, help me” than to allow yourself to speak, then afterward, repent. Those four words can bring peace.
Are you struggling with self-control? Submit to the Holy Spirit; moment by moment, day by day. Is it difficult? Yes! Why? Our spirit wars against our flesh and vice versa (Galatians 5:17 – AMP) but our loving and faithful Father has sent the Comforter and Advocate; the Holy Spirit, to strengthen and help us in our weaknesses. Philippians 4:13 (AMP) says we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, He gives us confident peace.
Draw strength from the Holy Spirit today, He is faithful. Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart. And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Develop that relationship.
Prayer
Holy Spirit I need You. I know I often allow myself to speak things in anger that grieve You. Forgive me, and help me to submit to Your Lordship. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
