The Exercise of Obedience

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” – James 1:22 (NKJV)

Imagine someone who wants to grow stronger but only reads about exercises, never actually lifting a weight or going for a run. Their muscles wouldn’t grow, would they? The same is true for our faith.  Hearing God’s Word is essential, but faith truly grows when we put that Word into action through obedience.

Obedience is not about rigid rules or legalism; it is about trust. When God asks us to do something, even if it seems small or challenging, it is because he knows what is best for us and those around us. Each act of obedience, no matter how minor, strengthens our spiritual muscles. It builds confidence in God’s leading and deepens our reliance on him.

Consistently ignoring God’s promptings can weaken our faith, much like unused muscles. What is one area where God is calling you to a greater act of obedience? Take that step, and watch your faith grow leaps and bounds.

Prayer

Gracious God, please forgive me for the times I have been a hearer only and not a doer of Your Word. Strengthen my will and my resolve to obey Your commands. Help me see obedience as an act of love and trust, and to experience the growth that comes from walking in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
