“…let it now be dry only on the fleece, but on all the ground let there be dew.” And God did so…” Judges 6:39-40 (NKJV)
God delights in transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Ordinary can refer to common, simple, routine, or even insignificant tasks, circumstances, or people. On the other hand, extraordinary means something remarkable and exceptional. God’s touch can transform the simple into the fantastic, and Zechariah 4:6 tells us that it’s not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit.
God delights in using ordinary people and things to show His glory. A young shepherd boy named David fought and defeated a giant with a sling and a stone (1st Samuel 17:41-52). A poor widow’s tiny jar of oil paid all her debts and sustained herself and her family (2nd Kings 4:1-7). A nameless slave girl pointed a mighty commander to his healing (2nd Kings 5). An ordinary little boy with five loaves and two fish fed the multitude (John 6:9-13). In Exodus 4:2-4, God used Moses’ ordinary staff to perform miracles.
In all the cases above, God’s divine touch made the difference between the ordinary and extraordinary. The transformation occurs when we surrender to Him. Alvin Slaughter beautifully sang about how God steps in when all we have for the need ahead is whatever is in our hands. He takes whatever little we have, blesses and multiplies it! Our God is truly awesome and worthy of all praise!
Be encouraged today. God is not looking for perfection or for persons who are in positions of prominence. He’s looking for willing hearts. Your quiet service (when no one is watching), your obedience, your unseen prayers and acts of kindness towards others, can all be turned into the extraordinary when empowered by the Holy Spirit. When we place what we have, regardless of how small or seemingly insignificant, into God’s hands, He adds His ‘extra’ to our ‘ordinary.’
Are you willing today to surrender your ordinary to God so He can make it extraordinary?
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for reminding us that You can use the simple and the small to display Your greatness. Nothing or no one is too small for You to use. Teach us, Lord, to surrender everything to You and watch You do great and mighty things so that others will see and be drawn closer to You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
