“…the Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ ‘A staff,’ he replied. The Lord said, ‘Throw it on the ground.’ Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.” – Exodus 4:2-3 (NIV)
God uses what is already in your hand. When God called Moses, He didn’t give him something new — He used what was already in his hand. Likewise, the widow’s small jar of oil and the boy’s lunch were ordinary, but once surrendered, they became channels for God’s power. God doesn’t need your perfection; He uses your availability.
When God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, Moses felt unqualified and unsure. But God didn’t ask for what Moses didn’t have — He simply asked, “What’s in your hand?”
In Moses’ hand was a simple shepherd’s staff. Nothing special — just a tool for guiding sheep. Yet, when placed in God’s hands, that ordinary stick became a symbol of divine power. It parted seas, performed miracles, and pointed an entire nation toward freedom.
God still asks that same question today: What’s in your hand?
He’s not looking for perfection, wealth, or titles. He’s looking for willingness. Your “staff” might be a talent, a relationship, a story, or even a struggle. Whatever it is, if you offer it to God, He can use it in ways you never imagined.
What gifts or talents do you have that you want to surrender to the Lord? In our strength, we cannot do it, but when surrendered to the Lord, it transforms lives and creates opportunities for the Kingdom.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for what You’ve placed in my hands. Help me to trust that You can use even the simplest things for Your purpose. I surrender my gifts, my time, and my plans to You. Do something extraordinary through my obedience, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
