“…Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” – Matthew 4:19 (KJV)
Discipleship begins with a simple invitation from Jesus: “Follow me.” It is not merely about gaining knowledge of Christ but developing a close relationship with Him that transforms our hearts and influences those around us. As we spend time in God’s Word, prayer, and obedience, we grow to reflect His character more clearly.
The disciples provide a powerful example of this truth. When Jesus called Peter and Andrew, they immediately left their work and followed Him (Matthew 4:18-20). Their willingness to surrender their plans allowed God to use them in extraordinary ways. Likewise, discipleship requires us to place Christ at the centre of our lives and trust His direction.
Another inspiring example is Timothy, whom the Apostle Paul mentored. Paul encouraged him to be an example to believers “…in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1st Timothy 4:12, KJV). Timothy’s growth in faith demonstrates how discipleship involves both learning from others and becoming a godly influence ourselves.
Jesus also taught that true discipleship is rooted in love. He said, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:35, KJV). When we show Christlike love through kindness, forgiveness, and service, we inspire others to seek Him as well. Growing closer to Christ is a daily journey. As we follow Him faithfully, our lives become living testimonies that point others to His grace and truth.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to follow Your Son. Draw us closer to Jesus each day and help us grow in faith, love, and obedience. Give us hearts that reflect Your character and lives that inspire others to know You. Teach us to serve with humility, love without condition, and remain faithful in our walk with You. May we be true disciples who bring glory to Your name and lead others toward Your saving grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
