Abiding in Christ – Part 2

Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.” – 1st John 2:6 (NLT)

A disciple feeds on the Holy Scripture (the Word of God). Feeding in this context means abiding in the Word of God. So reading and feeding are different. Whatever you abide in, you become.

How would someone know if you are feeding on the Word of God? Whatever comes out of you will indicate what food you keep consuming.

Jesus commissions us in Matthew 28:20 (NLT) to “Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” A disciple stays in the Word and lives it.

As we read and stay in the Word, we are transformed in the image and likeness of Jesus. God gave His Word for us to live by, and as we abide in It, we begin to see and experience the benefits. We also start loving God more. Jesus doesn’t just command love – He roots discipleship in His own love.

A disciple not only sees the directions of the Holy Spirit, but follows closely. Therefore, as disciples, it is important that we hear and follow. Jesus said to His disciples, “…Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19, NKJV)

The Holy Spirit wants you to be what Jesus was to the twelve disciples. He was their Lord, Saviour, Teacher, and Guide. You can have the same relationship with Jesus as the disciples had. He’s available to every disciple around the world.

The price for friendship with our Lord Jesus is not the amount of fellowship, but obedience to the Holy Spirit. Obedience is the greatest sacrifice.

Hearing the devil’s voice will not destroy you; heeding it will. Each time you ignore the voice of God, you are lowering the volume and giving access to the evil one. Don’t! Abide in Christ and be fruitful.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give me strength to not only hear Your Word, but to be a disciple, taking heed and practising It. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
