“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?…” – Romans 8:35 (KJV)
July 2026 saw a terrible mishap at sea off the coast of Guyana, in which scores of lives were lost. As Guyana mourned the tragedy of the MV Barima, many hearts carried grief, questions, and uncertainty. In moments like these, we are reminded of Job in the Bible, a man who suffered devastating loss. He lost his children, his possessions, and his health, yet he refused to let suffering separate him from God.
In the midst of pain, Job declared:
“…the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21, KJV).
Job’s account teaches us that faith is not the absence of sorrow, but it is trusting God when we do not understand. Though he (Job) never received all the answers, he discovered that God remained faithful through every trial. In the end, God restored Job and blessed his latter days more than his former (Job 42:12). This is a stark reminder that God can redeem seasons of loss and bring purpose, growth, and hope from our deepest pain.
Paul echoes this truth in Romans 8 by asking this question:
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” The response is NOTHING – in all the distress, death, grief, and uncertainty, we are more than conquerors (Verse 37).
The waters that surrounded the MV Barima, causing her to sink, are not deeper than God’s love. Yet our faith must move us beyond mourning into action. The best way to honour lives lost is to build a safer future — strengthening maritime safety, valuing every life, and working together so that such tragedies become a thing of the past — never again.
What do you do when disaster strikes? Every small act can become a powerful seed of healing: adopting or supporting a child, volunteering to counsel the grieving, fundraising for affected families, advocating for stronger safety protocols in everyday life, and working through our churches and non-governmental organisations to support our government in lasting change. This is discipleship – effecting positive change through action.
Today, let us hold fast to what remains: God’s love, God’s presence, God’s promises, God’s grace, and God’s hope.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, comfort every family touched by loss. Strengthen those who grieve and help us, like Job, to trust You even when we do not understand. Turn our sorrow into wisdom, our prayers into action, and our mourning into a renewed commitment to protect and value life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
