‘He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” – Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
Storms rarely announce themselves. They rise suddenly: an unfavourable diagnosis, a distressed phone call, a financial loss, a relationship unraveling – and in an instant, the ground beneath us feels unstable. In those moments, our first instinct is often to fight, to fix, to control. Yet in Psalm 46, a psalm written about earthquakes, roaring waters, and nations in turmoil, God speaks a different word: “…Be still, and know that I am God…”
It is not a call to passivity; it is a call to perspective. The Hebrew word translated “be still” carries the sense of releasing your grip – of ceasing to strive, ceasing to grasp for control that was never truly yours to hold. It is God saying, Stop. Look up. Remember who is still on the throne.
Did you know that your current storm did not catch God off guard? He was not scrambling for a response when your circumstances shifted. The same God who set boundaries for the sea, who holds the mountains in place, who has walked His people through exile, wilderness, and fire, is not wringing His hands over what you’re facing today. He remains exactly where He has always been – sovereign, unshaken, near.
This truth does not erase the storm. It does not promise the winds will calm on your timeline. But it does promise you are not facing it alone, and you are not facing it with a God who has lost His grip on the world. He is still God over the chaos, still God over your fear, still enthroned above every wave.
So today, let your hands open. Let your striving be quiet. Be still – not because everything is fine, but because God is faithful to see you through.
Prayer
Lord, my heart is often loud with fear when the storm rises. Teach me to be still – not in denial of what I face, but in trust of who You are. Thank You for reminding me that You are never surprised, not shaken, not absent in any storm. Steady my heart with the truth of Your throne today, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
