I am a planner; I have a weekly ‘To Do List,’ a work ‘To Do List,’ and a personal or home ‘To Do List.’ My calendars are up to date, and I have 15-minute reminders for every appointment. I have plans for the rest of 2026 and into 2027. We are planners by nature. We map out our mornings, our careers, our relationships, our futures — often down to the smallest detail. There is nothing wrong with planning; Scripture itself commends wisdom and foresight. But Proverbs 19:21 offers a gentle, steadying reminder: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
Our plans are real, but they are not final. Beneath every human intention runs a deeper current – God’s own purpose, quietly and faithfully moving history, and our lives within it, toward what He has determined is good. This is not meant to discourage us from dreaming or working hard. It is meant to free us. When our plans crumble, when doors we were sure would open close, when life takes a sharp and unexpected turn, we are not left stranded. We are held by God.
Think of Joseph: sold into slavery by his own brothers, forgotten in a prison cell for years, plans upended repeatedly. Yet he could later say, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…” (Genesis 50:20, NIV). His story was never really about his plans. It was about God’s purpose, unfolding patiently beneath the chaos.
So today, whatever plan lies unraveled in your heart – a job that didn’t come through, a relationship that shifted, a dream still waiting – take heart, the Lord has not lost His way. He has not been surprised. His purpose is prevailing even now, even here, even in this.
Every moment of our lives has been planned and purposed by God. He is in control, even when we cannot explain the uncertainties; He remains in control. His purposes are never lost. Today, hold your plans with open hands and trust the One who holds the outcome.
Prayer
Lord, my plans often feel so important, so urgent. Teach me to hold them loosely and to trust You more. When my way is unclear, or my plans fall apart, remind me that Your purpose still prevails – good, faithful, and unshaken. Give me peace to rest in Your unseen hand today. In Jesus’s mighty name, Amen
