“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Most of our anxiety has a quiet root: the belief that if we just plan carefully enough, work hard enough, or worry long enough, we can secure the outcome we want. We grip the wheel of our lives tightly, convinced that steering is the only thing standing between us and disaster. But control, as much as we crave it, has always been an illusion. We cannot guarantee tomorrow’s health, secure every relationship, or engineer our way around every disappointment. And when we finally admit this, anxiety often rushes in to fill the gap.
Proverbs 3:5-6 offers a different way to live: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Notice the sequence. Trust comes first – not after we understand, not after we’ve secured the outcome, but before. Therefore, trust precedes clarity; a surrender that comes before certainty.
Leaning not on our own understanding doesn’t mean abandoning wisdom or effort. It means letting go of our tight grip on outcomes we were never meant to control. It means acknowledging that God sees what we cannot – the complete picture, the long road, the purpose behind the pain. When we see a dead end, He may be preparing a doorway. Where we see delay, He may be at work in ways we cannot yet trace.
This kind of trust is not a one-time decision; it is a daily yielding. Some mornings, it will feel like anxiety wants to take the wheel again, insisting that we manage every detail ourselves. In those moments, remember Proverbs 3: submit (again) to His decision, in the fear, in the uncertainty – and believe that God is faithful to make the path straight, even when you cannot see the way forward.
We were never meant to carry the full weight of steering our lives. Loosen your hands. Let your heart trust. Let God lead.
Prayer
Lord, I confess how tightly I hold on to control, and how heavy that grip has become. Teach me to trust You before I understand, to submit my ways before I see the outcome. Quiet my anxious heart, and lead me on paths I cannot yet see. I release the wheel to You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
