“…Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord…” – 1st Kings 19:11 (NIV)
We often believe peace comes from control. At work, we manage every detail of a project. In business, we track every outcome. In our studies and personal lives, we strive to anticipate every challenge. Yet the harder we try to control everything, the more anxious and burdened we become.
Elijah understood this struggle. After his victory over the prophets of Baal, he expected a dramatic change. Instead, he encountered threats, disappointment, and exhaustion. Discouraged and overwhelmed, he fled into the wilderness. There, God gave him a simple instruction: “..Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Notice that God did not immediately give Elijah a new strategy, timeline, or solution. He first invited him into His presence. Elijah discovered that God’s voice was not found in the powerful wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper. In that sacred moment, Elijah released the burden of controlling outcomes and received fresh direction from God.
Dr. Myles Munroe had often taught that we were never designed to carry responsibilities that belong to our Creator. Our role is obedience; God’s role is sovereignty. Peace begins when we stop striving to control tomorrow and trust the One who already holds it.
Today, identify the area where you are fighting hardest for control. Is it a project, a promotion, a business decision, a relationship, or your future? Instead of carrying it alone, step into the presence of the Lord. As you surrender control to Jesus, He will exchange anxiety for peace, confusion for clarity, and your limited plan for His greater purpose. The breakthrough is often not found in taking greater control, but in standing still long enough to hear His whisper.
