“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…” – Psalm 46:1-2 (NKJV)
The recent MV Barima tragedy in Guyana has left many hearts saddened and searching for answers. In moments like these, we are reminded of how fragile life can be. Events can change in an instant, leaving families, friends, and entire communities grappling with grief, fear, and uncertainty.
When tragedy strikes, it is natural to ask, “Why?” We may struggle to understand why difficult circumstances occur or why God allows suffering. While we may not always receive the answers we seek, Scripture continually points us to a truth that remains steadfast: God is still in control.
Psalm 46 was written in the midst of turmoil and uncertainty. Yet the psalmist confidently declares that God is our refuge and strength, our safe place when the world around us feels unstable. The promise is not that we will never face storms, but that God will be with us through them.
Jesus reminded His disciples in John 16:33 (NKJV), “…In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Our hope is not found in circumstances, but in Christ, Who remains sovereign over every situation. He sees every tear, knows every burdened heart, and walks beside those who mourn.
Today, as our nation and the wider world reflect on this tragedy, let us remember that even when life feels out of control, God is not. He remains our refuge in sorrow, our strength in weakness, and our hope in uncertainty. We can trust that His loving hands are still holding us, even when the path ahead is difficult to understand.
May this difficult season draw us closer to the Lord and remind us of the importance of praying for one another, supporting those who are grieving, and placing our confidence in the One Who never changes.
Prayer
Lord, help us to trust You even when we do not understand. Remind us that You are our refuge and our very present help in times of trouble. Draw our nation closer to You and teach us to lean on Your unfailing love. May Your peace guard our hearts and minds, and may Your presence be felt by all who are hurting today. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
