Born to Lead – Part 1

“Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee… – Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)

“Everyone was born to lead. Leaders are ordinary people who accept or are placed in extraordinary circumstances that bring forth their latent potential, producing a character that inspires confidence and trust within others”.  (Dr Myles Munroe)

David, a shepherd boy, was placed in extraordinary circumstances. As a youth, he distinguished himself as a musician and warrior. Today, we are blessed by the many Psalms he wrote, which came from his experiences with God.

After God rejected Saul as king of Israel, God sent the prophet Samuel to Jesse, the father of David, to choose one of his sons. As Jesse brought his sons out to be evaluated, one was missing, young David. Jesse had exhibited whom he thought was the best or the most suitable. David was actually forgotten in the wilderness, where he was serving as a humble shepherd.

We must note that God is not impressed by our good looks when He evaluates us; He looks at our hearts. Matthew Henry comments, “The good disposition of the heart, the holiness or goodness of that recommends us to God and in His sight of great price (1 Peter 3:4), not the majesty of the look, or the strength and stature of the body.” God saw a pure heart, the heart of a true worshiper, one that loved Him, in young David. God chose the one least likely to be chosen. He chose the overlooked son.

Youth, you are not an afterthought. You were born to lead!
