“And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven.” – Nehemiah 1:4 (KJV)
William Barclay stated, “Love always involves responsibility, and love always involves sacrifice.” True love for God is demonstrated not only through words, but also through a willingness to respond when God places a burden upon our hearts. Nehemiah’s account clearly reflects this truth.
When Nehemiah heard about the condition of Jerusalem and the suffering of his fellow Jews, he was deeply moved. He did not ignore the pain or become consumed with hopelessness. Instead, he allowed those emotions to lead him into prayer, fasting, and seeking the face of God. His attitude positioned him for God to use him as an instrument of restoration and victory.
What is capturing your attention today? What burden has God placed upon your heart? In many situations, the outcome depends greatly on how we respond. Nehemiah chose to bring his concerns before God rather than relying solely on his own understanding. Through prayer and obedience, God granted him wisdom to navigate the crisis and favour with leaders to accomplish the task ahead.
At times, we may feel overwhelmed and believe that walking away is the easiest option. While stepping away is necessary at times, God also calls us to remain steadfast and trust Him through the process. Nehemiah understood that if God had called him, then God would also strengthen and guide him. Despite opposition, discouragement, and obstacles, he remained focused on God’s purpose.
Deuteronomy 20:4 (NIV) reminds us: “For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” When we keep the right attitude and remain surrendered to God, He can accomplish through us what we could never achieve on our own.
Your attitude matters. A heart filled with faith, humility, and obedience creates room for God to move powerfully in your life. Stay aligned with His plans and purposes, for He desires to use you for His glory.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I come before Your throne of grace and mercy today. Help me to trust You and remain faithful in Your presence. Guard my heart and attitude so that nothing will hinder the plans You have for my life. Strengthen me to walk in obedience and faith, knowing that You are fighting for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
