“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong…” – 1st Corinthians 13:1 (NIV)
We’re raising children in a loud world – filled with screens, opinions, pressure, and endless noise. It’s easy to respond with more noise of our own: louder instructions, sharper corrections, constant demands. But Scripture invites us into something different, something deeper – something that lingers, like the gentle scent of peace.
1st Corinthians 13:1 reminds us:
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” (NIV)
Noise may capture attention, but love cultivates peace. And peace leaves a fragrance in the home – one that shapes hearts long after words are spoken.
Friends, when love is missing, peace disappears. Parenting without love creates a harsh atmosphere. Rules without relationships echo loudly but settle nowhere. Correction without connection may produce compliance, but it does not nurture confidence or character.
In today’s world, our children don’t just need to obey — they need to become grounded, secure, and discerning. The scent of peace comes when love, not volume, becomes the foundation. We must cultivate that fragrance of peace in our homes.
Today, God is calling us to raise children with confidence to speak and safety to challenge. Let us reflect on these questions that can be asked at the dinner table or on the living room sofa:
- “What’s one thing you noticed today? What do you think about it?”
Don’t rush to correct or solve — just listen.
- Instead of “Because I said so,” try: “That’s a thoughtful question — let’s explore it together.”
In a home where peace reigns, curiosity is not crushed – it is cultivated.
Children blossom in environments where they feel heard. Peaceful homes are not silent – they are attentive. When you listen first, you show your child that their voice matters. Remember, we are called to parent with the fragrance of love.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have parented with noise instead of love. Fill my home with the scent of Your peace. Let my children feel safe to speak, free to question, and bold to create. Shape them with Your wisdom and release them with purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
