Shalom!

“…a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake…After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire…after the fire came a gentle whisper…” – 1st Kings 19:11-13

If I’m being honest, I don’t like storms. I’m not just talking about thunder and lightning. I mean the seasons when everything feels uncertain – when one phone call changes everything, the bills keep coming, prayers seem unanswered, or fear steals your sleep. My first instinct is to ask God to make the problem disappear.

But I’m learning that His greatest gift is often not an immediate rescue. It’s His presence.

That’s exactly what Elijah discovered in 1st Kings. Exhausted, discouraged, and afraid, he expected God to show up in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Instead, God came in a gentle whisper. I’ve found that to be true in my own life as well. Sometimes God speaks most clearly when I finally quiet my own heart enough to listen.

That’s easier said than done. Our lives are filled with distractions – the constant stream of text messages, app notifications, emails, alarms, and the endless feeling that everything demands an immediate response. None of those things is bad in themselves, but they can drown out the One voice we need to hear most: God’s.

Last week, a family member’s account was hacked through a group chat, and I thought my own information had been compromised. My immediate reaction was to delete the messaging app for a few days. Surprisingly, the break felt liberating. It also made me realise how much time and attention I had been giving to notifications that weren’t nearly as important as I thought.

When I reinstalled the app, I decided something had to change. The messages could wait. I didn’t need to check every alert the moment it appeared.

Maybe that’s the invitation for us today. To create enough margin in our lives that when God whispers, we actually hear Him. The world will always compete for our attention, but the Holy Spirit is calling us to tune our hearts to a different frequency.

Prayer

Lord, help me loosen my grip on the distractions that steal my attention and rob me of Your peace. Quiet the noise around me and within me so I can recognise Your voice when You whisper. Fill me with Your shalom and teach me to walk in step with Your Spirit, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
